The chapter starts and ends with Mayella Ewell's examinations. The first examination, of course, is the direct examination. I was pretty surprised when Mayela was answering her first couple of questions as if they were being asked as a cross examination. When Mr. Gilmer asked her questions, she would answer them in almost a short-tempered way. She was actually "scared" of Atticus and started to break down in tears. I think that she should have stayed a little calmer in relation to Atticus. By crying because of the person who will cross examine you shows that you are afraid to tell the truth. There should not be a reason that you cry in front of everyone just because you have to answer some questions. However, I think that this is good in favor of Mayella because she now has some people in the jury to feel bad for her. Even Mr. Gilmer says that Atticus is "big and bad", which should not be allowed because he is just doing his job.
The main point I want to get to is the cross examination. Atticus totally just exposed her in front the whole Jury, and everyone in the courtroom. He asks a slur of questions that Mayella stays quiet on. At this point, I was quaking in my seat. I thought that there is no chance that the jury would just forget about this huge event. Mayella acts like a five year old throughout the whole chapter. I think she should act more like her own age. If she does this, she will earn credibility by the jury, instead of being babied the whole time she is up there. Back to the cross examination. The question that stood out to me that Mayella ignored was "Who beat you up? Tom Robinson or your father?". Atticus made her look like a fool up in front of everybody, making her sound like the biggest liar in town, which she very well could be. However, Atticus is not excited nor is he hating Mayella. He keeps his cool and is almost sorry for making her look like such a fool. I think we could all learn something from Atticus not deliberately trying to attack her personally. He knows and stays in the line of personal and anything that happens in the courtroom. I would not be surprised if Atticus walked over and hugged Mayella after the whole thing. Actually, I kind of would be, but I would not be completely taken off of my seat. Now that we have heard Atticus sizzle Mayella in front of the Jury, do you think that the jury will keep her word, or will they end up going to Tom's side?
