Jem loves Atticus very much, he would rather face death than disappoint his father. Jem respects Atticus very much, he doesn't want to let him down, we can see it at the end of chapter 6, when he comes back to Radley's house just to get back his pants. Jem can tell the truth in the morning but he decided to not do that, Jem chooses to come back to the Radley's house and face with the death. In chapter 9, Scout fights a person on the school, because he says something bad about her father, Atticus, when he helps a black man in the lawsuit. Scout gets home and tells Atticus, but he just says that just let things go, if anything happens, don't get angry. When Scout talks with Atticus, she says a bad word and Atticus tells Scout to not use that word again. What Atticus' mean is he want Scout to become a better person by knows how to control her anger and let it go, he also wants Scout to know that fighting and use bad words do nothing. Through what Atticus teaches Scout, I think that he wants Scout learn how to forgive, also know what is right and what is wrong, what she should do and what she shouldn't. Scout asks Atticus about why he's defending Tom Robinson and he says it's because this is a right thing to do, even he knows that the chance they going to win is very low because of the racism and ignorance. Atticus wants Jem and Scout to do the right things, to do it, he has to do the right things so his children can do it. If Atticus doesn't do it, he couldn't face with his children.
Atticus is a great father, he knows the right way to teach his children, his high moral standard is rubbing off on his children. Atticus has teaches Scout and Jem many meaningful lesson, it help them become a better person when they grow up. Jem and Scout loves him very much and they don't want to make him upset. For me, Atticus plays an important role in the book, also in Jem and Scout's life. What he teaches not just for his children, also for us, the readers to know what is right and wrong, how can we do it.
I like how you described Atticus and his relation with his kids throughout the whole post. In the middle, you talked about the Tom Robinson case, which was very complete and thorough. Lastly, I love how you concluded with lessons we should learn as Jem and Scout do. Overall, a great and specific topic about Atticus and his high standards rubbing off on his kids.
