In chapter 28 scout is dressed up as a ham for the halloween pageant of maycomb. While she is waiting to be called the band plays the national anthem and Mrs. Merryweather begins talking about the history of maycomb and how Colonel Maycomb Died on his expedition and they had the town named after him. Then while scout is waiting she sits down in her costume and accidently falls asleep. When its her turn Mrs. Merriweather says pork until she starts yelling it. Eventually she moves on and goes to the next child. When Scout wakes up the anthem is playing and Ms Merryweather is planting the flag on the stage so scout tries to sneak on in her bulky ham costume but her attempt is in vain. The crowd sees her wobble on and begins laughing during Mrs. Merriweather's finally. After the pageant Mrs. Merriweather yells at scout because she claims that scout ruined the pageant. Scout is so embarrassed after getting yelled at by Mrs. Merriweather that not even Jem can get her to leave while all those people are still there and think that she is a fool.
I feel sorry for scout because she really shouldn't be that embarrassed. I myself when I was her age and younger did stupid stuff that always made me feel embarrassed. Some of it was even filmed on tape for my parents to embarrass me anytime they want to. Even today I often embarrass myself with simple mistakes that are just silly and I probably could have avoided. I think scout should know how to cope with these things. My way is mainly with laughter. Whenever I mess up I find the funny side of things. If scout could find her little mistakes more funny than she would end up having better days for the rest of her life. If you just resent the little things then you miss out on life. You can't get hung up on one thing for all eternity then other opportunities will just pass you by. Another way to cope with a silly mess up would be to say that later youll find this huge embarrassment funny. Sometimes even I'm embarrassed to the point where I can't find anything funny to think about so I just tell myself that this small thing now will be funny later instead of beating myself up about for the rest of my life.

Really great blogpost here! I really liked how you related to scout, by saying that you have embarrassed yourself many times, like we all have. My parents as well video tape me doing goofy things that after are very embarrassing. I also agree with you on how Scout should laugh it off. Laughing at something that you have done that was funny, makes you feel better, at least it does for me.
ReplyDeleteGreat blog post! I like the summary of the pageant. I can relate to how you feel when it comes to the second hand embarrassment for Scout. i also felt sorry for her. I like the somewhat inspirational things you said at the end.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great blog post Micheal! Your blog post talks more about Scout than other characters. I can see that you made a great connection between Scout's mistakes and your life. I agree with you that we all make mistakes and funny things that we just can laugh when we think about it. It is fun to make some crazy things like Scout did although she didn't want to and always think in positive way to make you feel better.
