During Mayella's direct examination, she just burst into tears. She was bound to, and she didn't really prove much in her direct examination. She was apparently afraid of Atticus, but I think that she was more than afraid. She was afraid that Atticus was going to make her look like a liar, and I think that she was embarrassed that she was so uneducated, and poor, and that her dad was a drunk. There is a part of the Ewell house that has beautiful red flowers; a place that is actually clean. I think that Mayella is actually a good person inside.
If Mayella had a female rolemodel in her life, and a sober father, maybe she would be a good person, and a nice girl. Sadly, that is not the case. The case might be, sadly, that the Ewell's need money, and through this case, they might earn some, but they had to make a big lie out of it. We will have to see. During the cross examination, Mayella did not answer a question that Atticus grilled her with. It makes me think that she is lying. If Mayella is lying, I think that it is not her fault. She was pulled into this by her father who most likely beat her up. Who do you think Mayella really is?
I like this post. I agree with you about Mayella if she had a female role model in her life then she will be nice, but she does not and they are doing this, because they might need money to survive.
ReplyDeleteI really like this post! I like how you talked how you were able to connect the Mock Trial into the cross examination in the book at the beginning. I also like the question you left at the end of the post. If you're looking for a real answer, I would say she is a girl who doesn't understand how the world works due to her lack of knowledge and is like a stray dog. She doesn't have friends.
ReplyDeleteThank you for that answer, It really made me think.

A great blog post Ellie. I like how you talk about the mock trial, the cross examination and then connect them to the cross examination in the book. That's idea is very interesting. I agree with you that Mayella is a good person inside. Like Mr. Boyle says, no one just wakes up one day and changes all their personalities, something changes the person inside them and Mayella is an example of this. I think that something must have happened to her that changes her personality. She is mostly influenced by her father maybe because of his physical abuse.
ReplyDeleteThank you, I do agree with you that Mayella can not change because she was raised a certain way, and she can't control her childhood, and yes it is very sad that she is influenced by such a terrible father.
