Mayella is a Sour Patch Kid

I know what you're thinking, this title is bizarre. Hold on one second I can explain, my title is a metaphor. Like they say in the commercials for Sour Patch Kids, "First they're sour, then they're sweet." To me, this describes Mayella's personality during her cross examination. At first, Atticus was acting calm and being polite to Mayella. He used words like ma'am and friend which Mayella did not like. She thought those words were disrespectful and mean. In reality, they were positive things. The reason she thought those were disrespectful was that she has never been given respect nor had a friend. Mayella was being sour

After a few questions, Mayella starts to become sweet. She trusts Atticus, and she becomes calmer and nicer. All of a sudden, Atticus changes paces during the cross examination. He starts to pellet her with questions. He keeps asking questions, and he gets Mayella to admit that Bob is abusive when he drinks. This destroys the relationship the jury had with Bob Ewell. Atticus has managed to destroy the credibility of Bob because of Mayella. Also, Mayella and Bob's testimonies of what happened were different showing something was not right. Now we have more evidence showing that it may have been Bob who beat up Mayella not Tom.

  1. This is a good blog post. I like how you made a metaphor out of Mayella's testimony. You did well picking out a famous line from a commercial we all know and love. You tied it with the testimony well, and you described the testimony thoroughly.

  2. I like your blog, it's really good. I like the way you used the metaphor in the title, it's interesting. I agree with you that Mayella is being sour because she has never been given respect, and after a few questions, Mayella trusts Atticus.

  3. Martin I really liked this blog post. I also liked your analogy of how Mayella is a sour patch kid. First she's sweet then shes sour and quite annoying. It shows you how some people change how they act one way at the start and immediately change in the middle of a conversation

  4. I like your post because of the meme. First their sour, then their sweet. She can get annoying at some times, because in order to win the case, Atticus needs to make them look like liars and look guilty. She is annoying because she has to cry saying the men are cowardly because they can't protect women, and saying Tom isn't guilty will make them coward. Great blog post
