Is Mayella Telling The Truth? Or Was She Drugged by Her Father??? THEORY

The direct examination of Mayella Violet Ewell has started. Mayella starts, but almost immediately starts to burst into tears. When told why she is scared, she points to Atticus. She says she didn't like Atticus trying to make it seem that her dad could've possibly been the one that had raped her. When she is finally done crying, she says that she asked Tom Robinson to help bust up a chiffarobe for her. She says that he then raped her. She says that she had yelled hard and tried to fight back. When asked what happened next she says she can't remember. She says she woke up with her dad on top of her asking "Who done it, who done it?" She says she fainted again and woke up with Heck Tate in the room.
Now, this might seem like a stretch, but taking the testimony she had given, I have created a theory that she was drugged by her father. Before you write your comments done below on how that's wrong and impossible, let me explain my theory. Now, I believe that her father had drugged her. Why do I believe this? This is because she said she couldn't remember anything after the initial beating. She says she woke up with her dad above her asking who done it and then say she "SORTA FAINTED." This could imply she is not one hundred percent sure what happened. Also one thing of note is how in her father's testimony, he says that he saw Tom Robinson rape her and get away. If that's the case, why does Mayella say he asked her who did it? Clearly one of the two is lying. i think that he drugged her and then when she woke up, he told her what "actually happened" when she woke up. I really like thinking that she was actually drugged and raped by her father. This is also another reason why he didn't want to bring her to a hospital. They could have found out that she was raped by her father and not Tom. This could also explain why she thinks Tom did it and not her father. She clearly has an abusive and just all around terrible father, as we can assume from how her brother, Burris, acts at school. Bob also admitted he wanted to save money by not bringing his daughter to a hospital. I know there might be some holes in my theory and I'd love you guys to give me feedback and my theory and some constructive criticism on how my theory might have had some things that contradict the book or add on to my theory. I will be happy with positive and negative feedback!

  1. Pablo,
    Interesting...
I don't know what to say about this, except that it is something. I like your summary, and I definately think your theory is something else. It is cool that you came up with something, but i disagree with you. I think that yes, Bob beat her up, but I think that they are both lying, and they can't get their stories straight.
    Good job

    1. Thank you for the feedback Ellie. However, you didn't give me much feedback to work with. Either way I thank you for taking time to consider it.

  2. This was a very detailed and wierd theory, but I respect it. I enjoyed all the effort and time you put into this story. However, I doubt Bob would drug his daughter. He has a very small amount of money, and I doubt he would spend it on drugs. I think he values the necessary things in his life like food, water, and the most important, alcohol. Good job overall though

  4. this was a good brief summary and I really agree with ur opinion here. I also like how you put your personal thoughts on this chapter and even included your own theory what you think Bob did to Mayella. I just think that you should have added a little more to your summary. I just disagree with you about her father drugging her. Otherwise, great job on this!
