Her testimony with Mr. Gilmer was done but it was not with Atticus. He asked multiples questions about her family because he wanted her to tell that her father was the person who was actually beat her while he was drunk. Some questions from Atticus that made Mayella felt nervous and it seemed like she had a lot to say to Atticus and the judge but she couldn't. "He hit me" was the answer from Mayella when Atticus asked her if she really remembered that Tom hit her. Then, Atticus asked Tom Robinson to stand up and the next thing that surprised all the readers was he was crippled.

Discover the Truth
Mayella's direct examination started with the same question from Mr. Gilmer like he did with other two witnesses. She began to talk in her own words with fearful and embarrassment. She burst in tears and Judge Taylor had to calm her down. The reason was because she was scared of Atticus that he would do the same thing with her that he had done with her father- Mr. Bob Ewells. She showed her emotion and that was her advantage to make the jury believe what she said. She started with her story that Tom came by when she was at the front porch. Once again, Mr. Gilmer asked Mayella who raped her and she pointed her finger to Tom Robinson. Mayella said on that day, Tom Robinson walked pass her house so she asked him to chop the chiffarobe for her; she would give him a nickel. However, when she went to the house, she turned back and saw Tom. He started beating her and she couldn't get out of his strong arms. She fought back, screamed loudly and Mr. Bob Ewells ran into the house but Tom already gone.
HIS LEFT ARM GOT CAUGHT IN A COTTON GIN AND HE LOST HIS ARM. That means Tom was not the one who beat Mayella because he couldn't use his left arm. We have known that the person who beats Mayella is left-handed person and Mr. Bob Ewells is left-handed. In my opinion, Mr. Bob Ewells was the one who beat his own daughter while he got drunk, not Tom Robinson. Even if it wasn't Bob, Tom was not guilty because his left arm was useless. I am amazed of how Atticus builds up his questions one by one and makes Mayella tells him the truth although it is not directly but we can figure it out. I believe 99% that Tom is innocent and Atticus will make that happen in the next few chapters. In my opinion, I think that the Ewells have planned what they gonna say at the trial and how they gonna act to make the jury trust them. They don't want Atticus, Heck Tate or anyone to know what was really happened at that day. We will find out, hopefully tomorrow.
