In this chapter we get closer to Calpurnia. Jem is starting to get moodier and is starting to hang out with Scout less, so Calpurnia decides to bring them to her church. When they go there, they are kindly greeted by all of the people but one of them and person's name is Lula, and right off the bat she annoyed me. When they are walking into the church Lula comes up behind them and starts on how the kids shouldn't be here because they are white. After hearing Lula talk to Calpurnia like this, Jem and Scout tell Calpurnia that they should leave because they are not wanted, but Lula gets off their back. After this they get to sit in the front pew for the mass. While they are there they learn that they do not have songbooks because most of them can't read the books anyways and they can sing the songs from memory. At the end the collection comes around, and they don't have 10 dollars so they lock up the place until they get it.
The reason that I put this title is because, well, segregation frustrates me. It's just an infinite loop of hate until people stop it. What I mean by this is because first, white people segregated black people by making them slaves. Then, black people started to separate themselves right back, then because of that white people continued to try to separate from them because the tried to separate from them, and I bet you can see that it is a confusing mess. All that this circle of hate is doing is making the world a worse place, when really we just all need to be tolerant and loving and understanding like Atticus. If everyone in the world was as tolerant as Atticus then we wouldn't have these problems, turns out we aren't Atticus, but that shouldn't stop us from being the tolerant human beings we are capable of being.

I really like your blog. I agree with you that many blacks hate white because they have captured black people as slaves in the past. For me, I think that Lula has some reasons when she says like that. Not everyone can open the heart to the person who has treated them badly in the past.
ReplyDeleteI loved this post. I 100% agree with you, segregation is very frustrating. I hate seeing how the characters of this book get treated my basically everyone, by the one thing they can not change, their skin color.
