Church is for EVERYONE...Lula

In the latest chapter, we get to become closer with Calpurnia. Jem is going through his phases in life. Jem shuts out Scout from his activities. However, he does not completely shut her out, which is good. Calpurnia realizes that Jem is just going through a phase and comforts Scout about it. Scout is quite frustrated with Jem's new behavior. Calpurnia just tells her to come in the kitchen whenever Jem is being moody. This makes Scout become better friends with Calpurnia. On Saturday night, while Atticus is gone, Calpurnia makes sure that the kids are washed up for Church tomorrow. She even checks in on them while they're in their baths. This, of course frustrates Jem even more.
The next morning, Cal brings the Finch kids to her church. They are politely greeted and welcomed. All but one person is happy to see Scout and Jem. Lula. Lula ridicules Calpurnia for bringing the white kids to the church that is all blacks. Jem and Scout tell Calpurnia that they need to leave because they are not wanted. However, they are wrong. Calpurnia tells Lula to bug off, and she does. The Finches and Calpurnia are escorted to the front pew. Jem notices there is something off about the church. They do not have song books. They soon learn that the songs are sung by memory and by copying the lead singer. After the singing, the collection comes around, but it is not ten dollars. They lock up the place until they have a full ten dollars. As promised, they opened the door once a full ten dollars was collected. After church, the kids ask why there are no song books. Calpurnia replies with news that surprised me. No one at the church but her and a few other people can actually read.
I can relate to Jem and Scout because I had the same reaction when I went to church in Mexico. I first went to Mexico when I was around four years old, so I didn't have enough sense to ask why they didn't have books. It didn't really strike my mind at the time. However, when I went to Mexico in the summer of 2015, we went to Mexico again. When we went to church, I was also wondering where the song books, pews, and walls were. The mass was outside, with plastic chairs, but some people sat under the trees. They didn't sing songs that were over a minute long. There was a main singer who would chant the words, and everyone else would repeat them. It took a while to get used to, but it was a fun experience. Also, in Mexico, no one would receive communion on their hands. I kind of felt embarrassed when the whole church saw me put out my hands for a good fifteen seconds before realizing that I was supposed to open my mouth to receive holy communion.

  1. I like your blog post. There was things that were wrong, but overall it was fine. I liked how you compared the chapter with your life, I can also relate with you.
