CHAPTER TWELVE..

In chapter twelve, we read about Jem going through his “changes” and has been kind of mean to scout. He told scout to start acting more lady-like, which made her cry and Calpurnia had to make her feel better. Calpurnia told Scout that he was just going through his changes into his “adulthood”, so she told her to start giving him some space. When summer came by, Dill didn’t come since his mother got married to a new man so he had to stay with him at Meridian. They wrote letters to each other and Scout got kind of sad but then got over it a few days later. Dill told scout that his father and him were going to build a boat together and sent her a picture of him and Dill together, and Scout said that he looked like a nice man. After Scout began to feel better, Atticus was called by the state since there were so many protests so he told Jem and Scout that he he had to deal with some social problems. While atticus was gone, they Maycomb newspaper had a cartoon drawing of him representing how hard he worked for Tom Robinson. The following sunday, Calpurnia took Jem and Scout to church. Scout describes the Church as basic with no electricity and no paint. A woman named Lula came up to them and began telling them that they are not welcomed at the church since their kind isn’t welcomed to the church where the white people go to. Lula and Calpurnia were arguing but Jem and Scout couldn’t really understand what they were saying because of their accent. Even though they didn’t feel welcomed, they still stayed anyways. Then they met Zeebo who was a garbage collector and Calpurnia’s son and was welcoming to them. After Zeebo, they met Reverend Sykes who was welcoming as well. Scout looked around and noticed that there were no hymn book and asked Calpurnia why. Zeebo was pretty much the only one who  was able to read, so he would have to read the first line, then the crowd would have to repeat what he said. Zeebo learned from Calpurnia and Calpurnia learned from miss Maudie’s wife. Reverend Sykes called specific people out to confess or repent on their sins. At the end, everyone tossed some coins in but Reverend counted them and told them that it wasn’t enough since it was all going to Tom Robinson’s wife, Helen Robinson because she had three children she couldn’t get any jobs. Reverend made them all stay until they got ten dollars. Everyone looked for any loose change and then he called out those who he knew were hoarding change until they finally reached ten dollars. Scout wanted to ask a lot of questions and one of them was what rape was, which was an example of how she still has some childhood innocence in her still. Calpurnia told Scout to ask Atticus. Scout then found out that Calpurnia didn’t even know how old she was since her family didn’t typically celebrate their birthdays, but she just knew that she was older than Atticus. On their way home, Scout asked (out of the many questions) if she could ever come by Calpurnia’s house and she said anytime. Once they got home, they saw her aunt alexandra sitting on their porch waiting for them.

  1. Nice summary of the chapter! However,I do feel that this blog post is lacking a few things. For one, there is no connection to your life. Second, there are no opinions from you about this chapter. And finally, no meme or gif was on here. This blog post seems rushed.
