I found this chapter very interesting. This chapter was interesting because of Calpurnia. She decided to take the two to church. Chruches were really different back then compared to today. It was the Great Depression. There was segregation. Segregation was a big thing back then and it wasn't fun for any races at all. Jem and Scout have to put up with a woman African American named Lula. She was giving them a very hard time because they were white. She drilled Calpurnia on why she was brining two white children to a African American church. I thought this was really ignorant of Lula to do this. I could see the differences of a white church and a African American church. In white churches, they had hymn books, organs, instruments. In African American churches they had a lot of nothing. They would repeat what the singer would say. Scout and Jem had a lot of questions after they went to church to ask Calpurnia about. Some of the questions were what the case was about, what rape means, and a few other things. I can relate to this moment, what Jem and Scout went through. I was little, and I was the only colored boy at a restaurant. The waiter was being racist by saying he wouldn't give us food because I was there. My grandparents had me at the time. My grandfather refused to leave until the manager came out. He was furious at the waiter because the waiter was being racist towards me. The waiter was saying that I didn't belong in the restaurant and that I should just leave, he said he wouldn't do anything until I left. The manager had fired the waiter, but it made me feel a bit bad. Calpurnia has a different way of talking to people. With African Americans it is way different than when she talks to white people. Jem or Scout asked why she talked that way around them but not around the house. Her answer is unclear, but I knew why she talked different to white people than to African Americans.

Good job on your summary and I like how you included a story of how this could have connected to you in the past. I also like how well you wrote this summary since it shows how well you understood this chapter. one last thing that you did well here was your opinion on lula and what you thought of her. Good job.
ReplyDeleteI like your blog and the way you connect yourself with the story. I agree with you that there are many person being racist. I think Lula has her own reason so she acts like that.
