Atticus is the Real Ideal Man, Move Over Slim

At the end of chapter 9, Atticus and Uncle Jack were having a conversation. Scout came down from her room, and started to spy on them. First, Uncle Jack talked about his conversation with Scout earlier. Scout talked about Uncle Jack not listening her side of the story, and Uncle Jack realized his mistaken thoughts. Second, Atticus talked about The trial of Tom Robinson with more details for us to learn. We found out that the Ewells accused Tom Robinson of raping Mayella Ewell who is a daughter of Bob Ewell. There is probably slim to no evidence that Tom actually did anything to Mayella, but they are the most ignorant and racist family in Maycomb so I was not surprised when finding out who accused Tom. There is some bad news for Tom. Since this is Maycomb with Jim Crow Laws, almost everyone in Maycomb is going to be ignorant towards Tom and think he actually raped Mayella. Atticus also talks about the reason he is doing this which is because he wants to do the right thing. Nobody is really approving, even Aunt Alexandra. She thinks that he should not defend Tom because it would ruin her reputation and the other Finches. Atticus notices Scout and tells her to go back to her room, which she does. She says that years later she would find out that Atticus wanted her to hear this.

Atticus is probably the greatest role model in book history in my opinion. He is very tolerant, and he has a high moral standard. Atticus is not in it for money. Atticus is not in for popularity. Atticus is not in it for the W. Atticus is in it because IT IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO. He wants his children to live a tolerant life like himself. He doesn't want them to get catch "Maycomb's usual disease" of ignorance and racism. He wants what's best for Tom and his family while putting his owng family on the line. Atticus could even be in the dictionary as a picture for tolerant. I respect and admire Atticus very much right now. Though he is a fictional character, he is an ideal man everyone should look up to in my perspective. Move over Slim, I think I found the real ideal man.

  1. Martin, I really liked your profile over slim. However, I believe that you were wrong when you said that since maycomb has jim crow laws that they are ignorant. It is more like that because maycomb is racist and ignorant It has jim crow laws. Sorry for criticizing such a simple thing but that is my opinion on the subject.

  2. Martin, I really liked the post you had here. I think you reflected on the book very well. I think I agree with you too on Atticus over Slim. Slim was Steinbeck's ideal man, while Atticus seems like Lee's ideal man. I like looking at the two ideal people for the two authors. I love how you talk about Atticus WANTING Scout to hear their conversation. At first, I had no idea how Atticus knew, but then I continued reading and I was like OH! I was still amazed how he knew that she was there. It was like he read her mind. Anyway, I loved you blog post, and I agree with you on Atticus over Slim as a role model.
