Jem and Scout's childhood innocence could be taken away by Maycomb!!!!
In Chapter 12, Cal took Jem and Scout to church - First Purchase. The church was built for black people so white people were very rare to be found in that place. The first person they met at the church was Lula. She wasn't a nice person to Jem and Scout because she said that the church was for black people, not for the white like them and they should not be there. I think that Lula is one of the person in Maycomb that could affect to Jem and Scout's childhood innocence. She shows ignorance and segregation towards Jem and Scout. If Cal wasn't there, they could have left the church and remembered all the words from Lula.
During church, Scout listened to the Reverend talking about Tom Robinson and his family. She, then, donated her money to help Helen- Tom's wife and Tom's children. On the way home, Cal said to Scout that Mr. Bob Ewell accused Tom of raping his girl and had him arrested and put in jail. His family was very poor and now, the only person can make money for his family, Helen, can't find a job. In my opinion, I think that Scout could have asked her why Helen can't get a job while she didn't do anything wrong. Scout would think the reason Helen can't find a job and has to stay at home is because ignorance of people in Maycomb. They think she is a bad person because her husband is accused of raping a white woman. From there, Scout and Jem may catch Maycomb's usual disease. After Cal told Scout about Tom's story, Scout asked her "what's rape". This shows that she still has childhood innocence and it should not be taken away by the disease in this time. I hope that Jem and Scout will have childhood innocence throughout their father's case. I hope they will come and ask Atticus questions that they don't know instead of asking other people in Maycomb. If they do what they aren't supposed to do, then they will catch Maycomb's usual disease very easily. They will know what is rape, racism, segregation, and ignorance and they wouldn't be able to act like they normally do if they catch it. I know that childhood innocence is part of our lives and it plays an important job in our lifetime Everyone has had it when they were about Scout's age. I hope that Atticus' words which are "VACCINE" to help Jem and Scout cure the disease throughout his case.
