Cal's Church, is it Holy? Or is it Exploiting People?

In chapter twelve, Calpurnia decides to bring Jem and Scout to her church. Cal makes the two wear formal clothing like suits and dresses. We meet a few new characters in the church. We meet Lula, a person who does not want Scout and Jem there because they're white. Another person greeta Cal and the two kids. His name is Zeebo and he is the son of Calpurnia. At the church, they talk about Helen, the wife of Tom Robinson and the mother of multiple children. Since Tom has been accused of raping a white women, Helen cannot get a job. This has the church ask for ten dollars as charity for Helen. The church won't let the people leave until ten dollars are raised. I found this to be quite messed up. Churches shouldn't lock people up until they are forced to give away their money. They should just talk about God.
I title the chapter they way it is because I have a question. Is cal's church actually about God and praising God, or is it a building that uses faith and religion to cover a hidden propaganda. Is the church a way of making money for these people? I know there are definitely some churches that care more about money than God. The church will try to brainwash the people into thinking it is for God and make them think they are doing something good. Some churches can be ran by scam artists looking to make a quick buck off of some holy and innocent people. My question is, does Cal's church do this often. I believe that this is what is happening with this church. They would not let anyone leave because they needed to donate. How do people even know the money will go to her? Also, we ourselves can't be for sure, but the church most likely has many charities that they make people pay for. So, for a comment, I would like to see you guys talk down below on your stance on this question is. Do you agree with my statement, or think it's a bit lackluster? I want to hear your guy's opinions on this.

  1. overall, this was a great summary and opinion of what you think of Calpurnia's church and exploitation. Also, I agree with your opinion here about cal's church only caring about money instead of God. You did a good job on both your summary and including your opinion !

  2. I liked your post here. You made a great summary of the chapter. I do have to disagree with you though. I think that this church just cares about its members very much. They realize that Helen (Tom's wife) is in a tough situation. She has no husband, no job, and a bunch of games. They want to help their members in any ways possible. It is a very nice thing to do for someone in a tough situation.

  3. Pablo this was an interesting view on Cal's church. However, I disagree with your theory that the church is keeping the money for itself. The people of the church are just aggressive this is because If people don't give the amount needed for Helen then Helen will die because they didn't help out. Most of these people have little money so they don't want to give it away. This is why father sky's has to get the money by force. If he doesn't, Helen and her family suffers.
