Scout and Walter
In class today, we learn that Scout met someone new, Walter Cunningham, who is a really poor kid. His parents own a farm but they still seem to be poor. To make matters worse, the stock market crashed and it made everything a struggle for them. Walter doesn’t even own a pair of shoes which causes him to have ringworms all over his foot. In the morning class, miss caroline found out that scout was able to read so she told her to tell Atticus to stop teaching her so that she could “undo the damage”. When it was time for the kids who live in Maycomb to go home and get their dinner, Walter had nowhere else to go since he had no money to eat somewhere. Miss Caroline gave him a quarter to go somewhere and get a meal but then she said to pay him back. Walter refused to take the quarter because he wasn’t able to pay her back if he took it and she took it kind of rude. Scout decided to stand up for him because Miss Caroline really had no much of a reason to be mad at Walter over a quarter. Scout ended up also getting in trouble and sent to the corner by miss Caroline with a ruler being tapped onto her hand as she was being humiliated in front of the whole class. When it was time for them to go out for recess, Scout beat up and shoved his face into the dirt Walter because he basically got her in trouble just because she was trying to help him. Jem came by to stop her as Walter was standing back so that he would be able to defend himself in case Jem were going to jump on him too. Jem ended up inviting Walter over for dinner and when they got home, Scout told Atticus to fire Calpurnia but he said he would never do that. When they all came back, Scout came into the classroom seeing miss Caroline standing on top of her desk because she saw that one of the students had lice so she told them to go home and take a shower. Another kid named Burris began to swear and cuss at miss caroline then left the classroom so that he wasn’t going to come back for the rest of the school year. This made miss caroline cry and all the student had to comfort her. When scout was walking back home, she was hoping that everyday of the rest of the school year would be like the first day. When she got home, Calpurnia kissed her and made her her favorite sandwich which was “not normal” for her. Calpurnia also noticed that scout was acting pretty down that day and when Atticus asked her what was wrong, she began to cry and tell him that miss Caroline told her that she was prohibited to read or write but she didn’t want to. Atticus told her that he would read to her and Jem every night so that she could practice more but he told her not to tell miss caroline because it could involve him into things. That night, Atticus read them a story of a man who sat on a flagpole for no reason. The next day, Jem went to his treehouse just like that man from the book until sunset.
