Chapter 3 summary

After Walter, got the molasses, Scout, made a very rude comment saying ¨what in Sam hill are you doing¨. Caledonia, heard this comment, and brought scout into the kitchen. In the kitchen, Calpernia, told scout that she was to treat her guest with complete respect, and not to judge him, because of his background. If scout was not going to be nice, Calpernia told her that she was to eat in the kitchen. However, Scout wanted to eat in the kitchen, and told Calpernia that, she also told Calpernia that she is the reason she got in trouble, because she taught her how to write. When Calpernia heard that, she got so mad, she slapped Scout. After they had dinner, Jem and Walter, left leaving Scout, because she was going to talk to Atticus about firing Calpernia. Atticus said that he never would, and that Scout needed to learn how to respect Calpernia.

Back at school, Miss Caroline was standing on her desk screaming. Scout thought that Miss Caroline was scared of a mouse. Two boys, Little Chuck Little and DC. She was frighted because a boy, Burris Ewell, had lice, According to her, he was the dirties human that she has ever seen. She then told him to go home and get cleaned, so that the other kids would get lice. Burris then sates that he was going to eave anyway and wasn't coming back. According to the other students, the Ewell's, only came to the first day of school, and would never show up again. Burris has only been to school a total amount of three days, and had repeated the first grade three times, but thinks he should move on to the second grade. However when Miss Caroline tried to get Burris to stay, a student said hat she should just let him go because he is so mean. Little Chuck little, told Burris that if he were to start something, he would kill him. Burris was actually threaded, even tho Chuck was half his size. As Burris left the room, he called Miss Caroline a s***, then waited until she started crying before he left the class.
As scout walked home, she thought about how miserable it would be if she couldn't read or write for the rest of the year, so she wants to run away. After super, scout went outside instead of reading with Atticus. When Atticus came outside, scout began to cry, then she told her father about her day and how miss Caroline told her not tot read or write. Scout stated that she wanted to skip the est of the year, just like Burris has done.Atticus then gives Scout the very important lesson of putting yourself in others shoes. When she does this, she realizes that Miss Caroline had a very hard first day as well, and that she probably made Walter very embarrassed.  Atticus then tells scout how the Ewell family is the shame of Maycomb county and that they haven't done a honest day of work their whole life. In the end scout and Atticus make a deal. They will still read and write together, but they won't tell Miss Caroline.

  1. This is a good summary of what happened in chapter 3. I think you should write more about your opinion about what happened like do you agree with the character. You can also write about your feeling after you read chapter 3, are there anything interesting for you.
